When a young adult transitions out of foster care into their own home for the first time, they may not have anything for their home, or even any idea about what to get.
That’s when one of RaisingHOPE’s community members reaches out to them. The member meets with them and finds out a little bit about what they like to do, how they spend their time socially (having friends over, etc.), and helps them figure out what they’re going to need in their home. The community member helps educate the young adult about things like different kinds of towels, kitchenware and other things maybe they’ve never even known about before. Together they register for the things the young adult needs and wants.
Then the community member’s friends will be invited to a housewarming party. Everybody brings things from the registry as well as extra things to give to the young adult. They laugh, talk and get to know them and begin forming a relationship.
The partygoers are invited to be on the young adult’s “team.” Then, in the weeks following the party when he or she finds they’ve forgotten something or an emergency need comes up, they can email their team and together they can find ways to give support.
